Just as I was leaving Emercy Web, Josh was finalizing something he had
been planning for some time: a complete redesign of the company to make
a clearer distinction between his Emercy.org charitable work, and his Emercy
Web for profit company.
Bonnie, Josh, Brandon and I brainstormed and came
up with a new name, a color scheme, and a new logo. Bonnie then designed an entire
new site, with our input when we felt we could add something to her great design
work.
While Josh liked her final design, and Brandon
programmed it as a static site in PHP, Josh also asked me to design a more active
site, using some subtle Flash work.
With his guidelines, and some of Bonnie's great
concepts, I set about adding motion to the static site.
We all agreed we wanted the Flash to be as unobtrusive
as possible, and a compliment to the design, not a distraction.
With those goals in mind, I created some of what
I consider my best work.
Here are my favorite parts of the Flash design:
1. The way the bird flies. I think it worked out very well. I particularly
like the way flowers appear on the tree when the user mouses over the menu
choices, and if clicked upon, the flowers morph into birds and fly away.
2. The subtle smoking effect at the bottom of the screen, giving a static
design element some movement.
3. The way the tags wiggle from side to side
under the 'what we do' menu choice.
The creation of animated flight:
Finally, I'd like to show the evolution of the design that I used to create
the more stylized bird that Bonnie envisioned for our site.
I worked from a public domain photograph I had
found of a bird caught with a stop motion camera to get the basic shape of a
bird's wings in flight.
Bonnie felt the bird I had found and animated was
too hawkish, and she wanted something gentler for our company. I agreed with
her, and modified my original Flash files to match her design.
Below you'll see two Flash movies, the first contains
the individual frames and full motion of the bird from my first attempt, and
the second as I modified it for the company design.
