Some texts I've read and used:
Don't Make
Me Think
Good site and book to start with.
Back
To The User: Creating User-Focused Web Sites
Great book with a focus on corporate use.
The Art and
Science of Web Design
Jeff Veen, the author's site.
Designing
With Web Standards
Zeldman's site, making sure your site matches
World Wide Developer guidelines.
Before and After Page Design
Sadly, there's no web page for this book, but it covers print and traditional
layout as well as World Wide Web design.
Design Hints
How do you use the Internet? For information? For play?
How much misdirection will you stand before giving up on a site?
Examine the sites you visit and enjoy, what navigation system does each site
use? What colors? How do the various graphic elements mesh together? As an exercise,
copy the layout of a site in Dreamweaver or Photoshop, all the way down to the
pixel level.
Finally:
Never ever forget that a web site is available for everyone to see.
Everyone.
In. The. Whole. World.
